Airline Ticket Sales Continue to Drop, While Fees Keep Increasing Jul 16th 2013, 12:50
Airline ticket sales by U.S.-based travel agents continued to drop in June, as well as in the first half of 2012, compared with the same periods last year, according to the latest statistics from ARC. At the same time, the amount fees, especially those charged by airlines, are on the rise.
The consolidated dollar value of all domestic and international airline tickets sold by U.S.-based travel agencies, including fares, taxes and fees, decreased by 0.71 percent year-over-year in the first six months of 2013 compared to the same period last year, to $46.11 billion. Sales for June 2013 were down 1.38 percent to $7.1 billion.
Broken down, total sales from fares, minus taxes and fees, were $5.74 billion in June, a 2.14 percent drop from June 2012. Year to date, total fares were $36.96 billion, a 1.87 percent decrease from the same period last year. Of those sales, domestic fares sold in June totaled $3 billion, a 1.89 percent drop from June 2012. From January through June, domestic fares were $19.06 billion a 3.28 percent decrease from the same period last year. International fares in June totaled $2.73 billion, a 2.42 percent drop from June 2012. Year to date, international fares were $17.9 billion, a 0.32 percent decrease from the first half of 2012.
In contrast, airline fees in June on all flights totaled $516.3 million, a 4.25 percent increase over June 2012. Year to date, airline fees totaled $3.73 billion, an 8.52 percent jump over the first six months of 2012. Taxes and non-airline fees in June totaled $717.58 million, a 0.6 percent decrease from June 2012. But for the first half of 2013, taxes and non-airline fees were $4.78 billion, a 0.53 percent increase over the same period last year. Total taxes and fees (airline and non-airline) in June were $1.23 billion, a 1.38 percent increase over June 2012. From January through June, total taxes and fees were $8.52 billion, a 3.88 percent increase over the first half of 2012.
In addition, agents are selling fewer airline tickets. The number of all ticket transactions in June totaled 11.38 million, a 3.89 percent decrease from June 2012. For the first half of 2013, the number of ticket transactions was 75.63 million, a 1.17 percent drop from the first half of 2012. The number of domestic transactions in June was 7.94 million, a 4.92 percent drop from June 2012. Year to date, the number of domestic transactions was 52.73 million, a 2 percent decrease from the same period in 2012. Internationally, the number of transactions in June was 3.45 million, a 1.43 percent drop from June 2012. However, for the first half of 2013, the number of international transactions was 22.9 million, a 0.8 percent increase over the same period in 2012.
