Compagnie du Ponant Orders Fourth Luxury Ship from Fincantieri Jul 16th 2013, 17:44
French cruise line Compagnie du Ponant signed a contract to build its fourth luxury “mini-cruise ship” at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy, for delivery in spring 2015. The new ship will be a twin to the 264-passenger Le Soleal, which entered service last month, as well as L’Austral and Le Boreal, delivered in May 2010 and April 2011, respectively. The company also operates the 64-passenger, three-masted sailing vessel Le Ponant.
The new 11,000-ton vessel will fly the French flag and have a cruise speed of 16 knots. The 132 cabins and suites all have a sea view, and 95 percent will have a private balcony. The ship will cruise in Alaska during the summer and in Australia and New Zealand during the winter, Fincantieri said in a news release.
“This new order marks a firm consolidation of our relationship with this prestigious cruise operator and allows us to secure a strong foothold globally in a very promising business segment,” said Fincantieri CEO Giuseppe Bono. “This encouraging achievement, coming shortly after other new orders, has been realized in a still difficult market and has been possible also thanks to the greater cohesion achieved within the company that bodes well for the necessary improvement in efficiency and competitiveness.”
