Silversea Confirms Failing Score in CDC Health Inspection Jul 19th 2013, 11:21
Silversea Cruises confirmed that its Silver Shadow received a failing score of 84 after a sanitation inspection on June 17 in Skagway, Alaska. Silversea said the score was “atypical” for the luxury line. Scores 85 and lower are considered “not satisfactory” by the Centers for Disease Control’s Vessel Sanitation Program.
“Silversea is deeply disappointed by this specific and only unsatisfactory score and has taken immediate measures to address the issues identified in the inspection report,” the company said in a statement. “Following a thorough review of Silver Shadow’s procedures, we have taken the necessary measures to ensure that the standards are the best in the industry. All Silversea ships have comprehensive policies and rigorous training programs in place to make certain its staff and crew implement best practices to ensure shipboard safety. Silversea is sincerely sorry for the shortcomings in Silver Shadow’s evaluation and is committed to ensuring that future inspections result in higher scores in line with the usual Silversea standards.”
The CDC posts scores and reports about findings and corrective measures on its website. The Silver Shadow’s report has not yet been posted, but word leaked out.
The Silver Shadow has indeed had high scores in the past — a 95 on Sept. 3, 2012; 99 on May 29, 2012; 97 on Sept. 4, 2011; and 98 on June 13, 2011. Until this incident, its lowest score was a 92 on Sept. 10, 2004.
“The company takes very seriously its responsibility to maintain the highest standards in all areas of its operations. Silversea has an excellent track record when it comes to sanitation, which can be verified on the CDC’s website,” the company statement said. “Silversea ships have achieved perfect scores of 100 on several VSP inspections, including Silver Spirit’s most recent inspection in April, which is testament to the company’s commitment in this area.”
