Reuters, National Public Radio and other news source are reporting that New York City developer Larry Silverstein may be able to recover up to $3.5 billion in damages from airlines and other parties including United Continental Holdings Inc. (United Airlines), US Airways and AMR Corp. (American Airlines) connected with damages to the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Silverstein has already received $4 billion from insurance payouts. U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein who is deciding the case without a jury, said he will conclude the three-day trial with a decision on Wednesday, July 17.
In 2012, Hellerstein dismissed a similar lawsuit by Silverstein against United Airlines, claiming that the airline could not be held responsible for the hijacking of an American Airlines flight and the collapse of 7 World Trade Center. In 2011, Hellerstein ruled that Con Edison could also not be held responsible for damages to the building.
